Duolingo
A habit app. Fine as a few minutes a day. Not enough Japanese by itself.
BeginnerFreemiumEasyCourseiPhone, Android, Web
Good fit if
- People who will only open a phone for five minutes
- Absolute beginners meeting kana
- Learners who already have a real course beside it
Look elsewhere if
- You think streaks equal fluency
- You need grammar retrieval or reading
- It would replace a textbook you would actually finish
Duolingo is a free language app. The Japanese course can introduce kana and some vocabulary. That is a start, not a curriculum.
Who it fits
It fits people who will not open a textbook tonight and will open a phone. A small, honest role.
Limits
Streaks are not study quality. You still need Tae Kim or a textbook, reading, and a review tool that uses real Japanese. If the app is your only source, progress will stall at tourist phrases.
