Genki

Genki is a beginner Japanese textbook series from The Japan Times. awesome-japanese and All Language Resources both treat it as the default classroom starting book. That popularity is not a quality score. It means many tutors, classes, and answer keys assume it.

What job it does

It sequences grammar, vocabulary, dialogue, and writing practice. The workbook is the useful half for many self-learners. Audio supports listening, but it is not a podcast course.

Kana is an early, bounded job inside the book. The official introduction places hiragana in Reading and Writing Lesson 1 and katakana in Lesson 2. It tells learners to master hiragana during Lesson 1, katakana during Lesson 2, and to be able to read both scripts by the end of Lesson 2. Conversation and Grammar Lessons 1 and 2 use hiragana and katakana with romanized readings, then drop romaji from Lesson 3. The publisher also hosts a hiragana chart with stroke order and audio.

If kana is still the bottleneck, use the two-week kana guide beside those lessons. After the series, use What to use after Genki instead of buying a second beginner book.

Limits

Buying only the textbook and skipping exercises wastes the design. Later volumes still leave you short of independent reading. Pair it with NHK News Web Easy or Satori Reader once dialogues feel easy.

How to test it

Do one lesson and the matching workbook pages. If you finish them in a normal week, the format fits. If the book sits unopened, try Irodori or a guided app environment instead.
