Official JLPT practice materials
Start exam practice with the organizers' sample questions and Official Practice Workbooks. They show the real item types. They are not a full course.

- You expect a published official vocabulary or kanji list
The Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services publish free sample questions and two Official Practice Workbook volumes. The samples show each item type. The workbooks, sold by Bonjinsha, each contain almost the same number of questions as one real test, drawn from exams after the 2010 revision.
That is the only first-party view of the current test format. Third-party mocks can copy the look. They cannot replace organizer questions.
What the official test actually contains
The official test-section page is the source for structure. N1 and N2 combine Language Knowledge (Vocabulary/Grammar) and Reading in one sitting, then Listening. N3, N4, and N5 split Vocabulary into its own section, then Grammar and Reading, then Listening. Times differ by level. The same page lists item types such as kanji reading, sentential grammar, short and longer reading, information retrieval, and listening tasks.
The level summary describes competence, not a vocabulary count. N5 is some basic Japanese. N1 is Japanese used in a variety of circumstances. There is no official published list of words, kanji, or grammar points to memorize. The FAQ states that Test Content Specifications lists stopped after the 2010 revision.
How to use the samples and workbooks
Download one level’s samples first. Sit them with the official audio, a printed answer sheet if you can, and a timer that matches that level’s sections. Then buy the matching Official Practice Workbook only if you will sit a full timed attempt and review the script.
Two workbook volumes exist (2012 and 2018). That is still a small set of authentic papers. Do not spend them as daily homework. Save at least one full sitting for late in the calendar.
What they cannot do
They do not teach Japanese. They do not schedule review. They do not tell you how many hours you need. A raw practice score is also not a pass forecast: the official FAQ explains that the real test uses scaled scores, and that passing requires both an overall pass mark and a minimum in each scoring section.
