Start with official JLPT samples and workbooks. Add Shin Kanzen Master for one weak section, Migii for extra timed mocks, and keep language skill on grammar, kanji, and listening hubs.
The best JLPT study resources start with official sample questions and workbooks. This fits learners who already have a language path and need to understand the exam or repair one weak section. The main limit is that no prep app can replace the grammar, kanji, reading, and listening needed to answer the items. Open the official samples first, then add one skill book or mock source for the gap they reveal.
This page does not rank a single JLPT product or estimate hours to pass. Pass and fail follow the official overall and sectional pass marks on jlpt.jp. Required time varies.

Most learners need official papers plus one skill drill or one mock app, not all six.
Official sections first
The test is not a mystery list. Composition of test sections is the first-party map:

Times can change. The official page notes that listening length can vary with the recording. N1 is the hardest level and N5 the easiest. There is no official published vocabulary or kanji syllabus.
Sit official sample questions with the matching audio before you buy a third-party mock. Save Official Practice Workbook sittings. Two volumes exist. That is still a small authentic set.
Shin Kanzen Master when one section is the problem
Shin Kanzen Master is a 3A series that trains one skill per book. The English catalogue lists grammar, listening, reading, vocabulary, kanji, and word books for N1 through N4. It is the paper workflow for a known weak section, not an N5 starter kit.
Buy the book that matches the section you missed on an official sample. Finish it. Do not open five volumes in the same week.
TRY! or So-matome when you want ASK paper instead
TRY! teaches JLPT grammar through texts, then reviews with exam-format questions. Nihongo So-matome is the two-pages-a-day skill calendar. Pick one ASK series, or Shin Kanzen Master, not all three.
Migii when you need more timed reps
Migii JLPT puts N5 through N1 mocks on web, iPhone, and Android. Use it after you already know the official item types and need more sittings than two workbooks can give.
Its scores, in-app certificate, and word lists are product features. They are not JEES results. Confirm free versus premium limits on the upgrade page before paying. This site does not repeat the app’s score-increase marketing.
Language skill still lives on other hubs
A mock does not teach the language. Keep one explanation or retrieval loop from the grammar hub, one kanji path from the kanji hub, and one audio source from the listening hub. Nihongo no Mori is a Japanese-medium video class for learners who can already follow that. Bunpro is retrieval, not a past paper.
Inku fits prepared JLPT vocabulary review on iPhone. It does not own this shortlist. Put it in the vocab-review slot only.
A practical exam loop
- Pick the level from the official competence summary, not from an app’s word count.
- Sit one official sample with a timer that matches that level’s sections.
- Study the weak section with one book or one retrieval tool.
- Sit another official workbook or a digital mock only when the last sitting is fully reviewed.
If you are still on a first beginner course, stay on the beginner hub. Registering for N5 does not require a second Japanese curriculum. It requires finishing the one you have, then seeing the official paper.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best JLPT study resources?
Start with official JLPT sample questions and Official Practice Workbooks so you see real item types. Add one Shin Kanzen Master book for a weak section at N4 to N1, or Migii for extra timed digital mocks. None of these replace a grammar, kanji, or listening path.
Is there an official JLPT vocabulary or kanji list?
No. The official FAQ says Test Content Specifications lists are not published after the 2010 revision. Use the official level summary and sample questions instead of treating an app list as the syllabus.
How is JLPT pass or fail decided?
The official FAQ says you must sit every required section, reach the overall pass mark, and reach the sectional pass mark in each scoring section. The real test uses scaled scores, so a raw mock score is not a pass prediction.
Should beginners start JLPT prep immediately?
Only after a first course can actually finish. Official N5 samples are useful once kana and a beginner path are in motion. Shin Kanzen Master is catalogued from N4 upward, not N5.
