Good fit if

  • Learners who want vocabulary tied to a show they already watch
  • People who prefer writing their own kanji mnemonics over reading prepared ones
  • Learners who want to turn Japanese text into review cards

Look elsewhere if

  • You want feedback from a human teacher
  • You need a full grammar course as your main resource
  • You want a fully free ongoing app

The study job

Kakitori starts from a show you pick and builds early vocabulary from it. The official site describes short lessons with audio, a two-button SRS review, and kanji mnemonics that you write yourself and then get AI feedback on. It also describes turning Japanese text into a review deck.

The Google Play listing describes a path from kana to kanji to sentences, line decoding with audio, community decks, and text mining.

How to evaluate it

Pick one show and finish the first lesson. Write one kanji mnemonic of your own, read the AI feedback, and decide whether it helps you recall the character the next day. Mine one short piece of text you actually want to read, then check whether the next review session feels manageable.

These are suggested evaluation steps, not recorded hands-on results. Recognizing a word inside a familiar scene is only the start; check whether you can read it in new text.

Limits and cost

Kakitori is free to try, with a one-time paid unlock for the full path. Verify the current price and currency in your store before you buy.

AI feedback on a mnemonic is a study aid, not a teacher’s correction. Show-based vocabulary does not replace grammar study or speaking practice.

Other paths

Use the flashcard and SRS hub for other review tools and the kanji hub for other character-study approaches. Add the reading hub so mined words have somewhere to appear.
