Anki

Anki is a strong Japanese SRS for learners who already have words, sentences, audio, or a trusted deck to remember. Its main strength is control over notes, prompts, and scheduling. Its main limit is the same control: Anki does not choose a Japanese curriculum or fix weak cards. Start with one small deck and raise new cards only after the review load is clear.

What Anki does well

It follows your source material

If your Japanese comes from a class, textbook, tutor, novel, game, or podcast, Anki can preserve the exact material you want to retrieve. That is its major advantage over a fixed course.

One note can hold an expression, reading, meaning, sentence, audio, image, and source. Templates can create different cards without duplicating the underlying data.

It gives you meaningful scheduler control

Current Anki includes FSRS, a modern scheduler that can learn from review history and target desired retention. Deck options also cover daily limits, new-card order, leeches, burying, presets, and maximum intervals.

The official manual recommends spending time with defaults before changing settings. That is good advice. Most new Japanese decks are improved more by better material and fewer new cards than by scheduler tuning.

It can remain useful for years

Anki’s material is not tied to one publisher’s path. As your Japanese changes, the same collection can move from beginner vocabulary to personally mined sentences and specialist terminology.

The official Anki ecosystem includes desktop apps, AnkiWeb synchronization, and the paid AnkiMobile app for Apple devices. AnkiDroid provides the Android client in the ecosystem linked from the official site.

Where Anki asks more of you

Card quality is an editorial job. You must decide what deserves attention, how to phrase the prompt, which answer is acceptable, and when to suspend an item.

Shared decks reduce setup but introduce a different question: do these cards match your goals, preferred readings, and stage of Japanese? A large, popular deck can still contain thousands of items you have no immediate use for.

The interface also exposes enough options to invite endless tweaking. A stable preset and a strict limit on maintenance time are often better than an ideal configuration.

A sensible Japanese setup

Start with one note type and one primary recall direction. For vocabulary, a useful minimum is:

• the Japanese expression;
• reading where needed;
• one concise meaning;
• a short sentence or source context; and
• audio when listening or pronunciation matters.

Avoid testing five facts at once. If the expression has several unrelated meanings, split the learning job or provide enough context to make the expected answer clear.

Set a small new-card limit and leave FSRS at a conservative default while the deck develops history. Press “Again” when you failed to recall; “Hard” is for successful but effortful recall. If you want to see how those new cards return over a year, use the SRS workload simulator. It is not FSRS.

Anki versus a guided resource

Choose WaniKani when you want a supplied kanji sequence more than custom material. Choose Bunpro when grammar retrieval and prepared sentence prompts are the job. Choose Inku when you want a prepared Japanese library on iPhone instead of building cards. The pair decisions are Inku vs Anki and Anki vs WaniKani, including Anki used only for kanji.

Anki can also sit beside those tools: keep their supplied curriculum in its original system and reserve Anki for material you personally encounter. Duplicating everything across both queues usually adds management rather than learning.

A two-week fit test

Build or import no more than a small, relevant deck. Run it for two weeks before adding plugins or complicated templates.

At the end, check whether card creation sharpened your attention, whether answers were easy to grade honestly, and whether reviews returned you to reading or listening. If most of your time went into finding the perfect deck or styling cards, the system is doing the wrong job.
