Japanese reading resources for beginners

The best beginner Japanese reading resource is one you can finish. Three jobs cover most searches: controlled graded books, annotated reading, and choosing native material. NHK News Web Easy remains the default short article. None of these is a full beginner course, so pair reading with a beginner course if you need one. Pick one source for three sessions this week, or start at Japanese resources for beginners if you still need a whole path.

Best for finishing books: Tadoku

Tadoku is extensive reading: a lot of Japanese you mostly understand. Start with one free title on the official free-books page. Buy a print pack only after you finish easy books and want paper. Audio is listed on many official graded readers and as a filter in the free library. It is not guaranteed on every file.

It fails as a PDF collection. If a daily article is the only habit that happens, keep NHK Easy.

Best for notes beside the line: Satori Reader

Satori Reader teaches through stories you read or listen to with extra support. The official homepage, checked 10 Sep 2026, frames it as supported immersion in stories. First chapters stay the honest test. The rest sit behind a subscription.

Use it when you want explanations inside the text. It is not a full grammar syllabus and not a substitute for a textbook sequence.

Best for choosing native material: Natively

Natively grades native books, movies, and TV by community comparison. Use it when graded readers feel easy and you need a next title, not a random storefront bestseller. It does not teach the book. Pair it with Yomitan on pages you already intend to finish.

Best for a daily page: NHK News Web Easy

NHK News Web Easy rewrites news in easier Japanese. The job is a finished page, not a current-events hobby.

Use it three weekdays a week before you add a second library. If news topics bore you, switch the habit to Tadoku or Satori. Do not keep Easy open in a tab you never read.

Extra pages, not a new method: Watanoc

Watanoc publishes slower Japanese articles. Add it after NHK Easy feels easy. Do not replace a habit that already works.

Lookup, not a reader: Yomitan

Yomitan shows readings and definitions when you hover text. It belongs with a page you intended to finish. Cap lookups. If you look up every word, you are compiling a dictionary.

Beginners who still wrestle with kana should keep Jisho in a tab instead.

If lookup itself is slowing the session, use the Japanese dictionary apps and websites shortlist to choose one default and one context tool.
