Japanese flashcards on iPhone
On iPhone, pick one review owner. Inku is prepared Japanese cards. AnkiMobile is for decks you already own. A browser drill is enough for a first kana week.
How to follow this guide
- Name the material you need to remember: kana, prepared vocabulary, or cards you will write yourself.
- Install one iPhone review app that matches that material, not three.
- Cap new cards at a small daily number and finish due reviews first.
- Keep audio on when pronunciation is part of the job.
- After a week, keep the app only if reviews still fit a weekday and still match your Japanese.
An iPhone is a good Japanese review device because it is already in your pocket. It is a bad place to run three overlapping SRS apps.

Prepared Japanese cards
Inku is an iPhone app with ready-made kana, JLPT-labeled vocabulary, topic decks, phrases, and bundled audio. The official site, checked 1 Sep 2026, lists 2,701 vocabulary cards, 436 phrases, and more than 6,000 audio clips. Core reviews stay on the device. There is no learning account.
Use Inku when the bottleneck is “I want a Japanese review loop today” and you accept the library. It is the wrong fit if you need Android now, desktop review, or Anki-style templates.

Cards you already own
Anki is the portable engine. The official iPhone client is AnkiMobile, a paid app in the Anki ecosystem. Use it when the collection exists or will exist: class notes, mined sentences, a deck you trust.
Do not buy AnkiMobile to postpone choosing Japanese material. Empty Anki on a phone is still empty Anki.

Kana only
If the whole problem is hiragana and katakana, you do not need a vocabulary SRS yet. Use the two-week kana guide, the on-site kana quiz, and optionally Real Kana for dedicated iPhone kana practice.
Inku can hold prepared kana cards after that. It is not a handwriting workbook.
A weekday rule
- Due reviews first.
- A small number of new cards, or zero if due work already fills the commute.
- Japanese that is not a card: one page, one clip, one conversation prompt.
The SRS workload simulator shows why five extra new cards are not free. It is not Inku’s scheduler.
What not to stack
Do not run Inku, AnkiMobile, and a third vocabulary app on the same nouns. Do not add WaniKani until kana is readable and you want a kanji sequence. That pairing is Inku vs WaniKani.
One iPhone review owner is enough. The rest of Japanese still happens outside the app.

There is no overall winner. Use Inku when you want prepared Japanese cards without building a deck. Use AnkiMobile when you already have or will create cards. Use a kana drill if the only job is hiragana and katakana.

No. AnkiMobile is the right client when Anki already owns your collection. It is extra setup if you do not yet know what belongs on a card.
