Bunpro

Bunpro is a useful Japanese grammar SRS for learners who understand an explanation but cannot retrieve the form in a sentence. It uses typed grammar and vocabulary prompts with study paths and examples. The main limit is the prompt: filling a controlled blank is not the same as reading, listening, or speaking. Use the 30-day trial with one small path and keep real Japanese beside it.

Why grammar SRS feels different

A vocabulary card can often ask for a relatively contained association. Grammar depends more heavily on sentence meaning, register, conjugation, and competing valid forms.

Bunpro manages this with answer lists, hints, undo handling, “Ghost” reviews after mistakes, and feedback about why an answer did not match. The prompt remains controlled, but it asks for more than passive recognition.

The official pricing page currently describes more than 900 grammar items, over 10,000 example sentences, native audio on grammar examples, more than 120 graded reading passages, vocabulary decks, and multiple review modes.

Paths or textbook order

Bunpro can supply an ordered route from beginner material upward, and it also maps grammar to textbook references. That makes it practical as either a primary grammar sequence or a review layer beside Genki, Tobira, Minna no Nihongo, and other materials.

If you arrive with prior knowledge, individual grammar points can be marked known or set to a manual SRS stage. That is useful, but scan the explanation and examples before skipping; familiar labels often hide a nuance you have not practiced.

The WaniKani connection

Bunpro offers WaniKani-aware furigana and vocabulary integration. It can mark equivalent burned items known and bring Guru vocabulary into additional practice.

This makes WaniKani plus Bunpro a coherent combination for learners who want supplied kanji and grammar paths. It also creates two review queues, so pace lessons in only one system at a time until the daily load is clear. The SRS workload simulator shows how new items return later. What Bunpro cannot simulate

Typed cloze answers are still bounded prompts. Real Japanese may omit information, allow several natural phrasings, or require a social choice that a single target answer cannot capture.

Use Bunpro to make forms retrievable, then notice them in reading and listening. For isolated verb and adjective endings, the conjugation drill is a shorter practice step. Write or say your own sentences and get human feedback when production matters. The SRS is preparation for that ambiguity, not a replacement for it.

Pricing and trial posture

Bunpro currently offers free access to a limited set of reference and learning tools. Premium includes complete SRS reviews, decks, and the broader feature set; the official page lists $5 per month and $150 lifetime, with a 30-day trial that does not require a card.

Use the trial to see a maturing queue. Adding a large number of points on day one tests your enthusiasm, not the product’s fit.

A good first setup

Choose one path: your textbook order or Bunpro’s sequence. Add a small number of grammar points and keep the answer assistance strict enough to reveal what you do not know, but not so strict that harmless wording differences dominate the session.

After each review block, read several full examples without immediately turning them into more scheduled work. The objective is flexible recognition and use, not only a clean review percentage.
