Is WaniKani enough to learn Japanese?
WaniKani is a strong answer to a missing kanji plan. It is not a complete Japanese course. Pair it with grammar and input, and keep the review queue honest.

- Read or listen to Japanese you can finish several days a week.

No. WaniKani can own a kanji and vocabulary sequence. It does not teach enough grammar, listening, speaking, or reading volume to be the whole plan.
The official overview describes more than 2,000 kanji and 6,000 vocabulary words, with radicals, mnemonics, unlock order, and a review rhythm. That is the value. The same design is the limit: you follow its order, and the course stays organized around kanji acquisition.

A smallest stack beside it
- Sequence: one beginner or intermediate course you will finish, such as Genki or Irodori. WaniKani is not that course.
- Retrieval for grammar: Bunpro after you are already meeting sentences. Bunpro without input is another closed game.
- Input: a short article or graded page several days a week.
- Optional Anki: only for items WaniKani will not schedule, from pages you finished.
Do not duplicate WaniKani items into Anki. That is maintenance, not a second memory.

Workload is the real “enough”
Early WaniKani reviews arrive on a timer. When the queue grows, stop lessons. The course will wait. Tomorrow’s reviews are the cost of today’s batch. How to use SRS without burning out is the reset if the queue already owns the week.
WaniKani is enough when the question was “I have no kanji plan.” It is not enough when the question was “I need Japanese.”
